We met Delores when she left the shelter and delivered a Welcome Home Kit to her new apartment. She was happy to have company and eager to show off her new place. I was struck by the emptiness. No microwave, pots, pans, plates or silverware. Her refrigerator held only bottled water, milk, and a fast food bag. No shower curtain or floor mat. A toothbrush and travel sized toothpaste lay on the sink edge. She slept on the carpet using a single sheet as the base and a coat as her cover. Her clothes were neatly piled in the corner of the room. We sat at a small kitchen table with two chairs; the only furniture in her place. As Delores pulled out each full-sized hygiene item she smiled and cried. She stated everything in the Kit was desperately needed. She relayed that when leaving the shelter, a job and an apartment is all the ladies have along with their bag of clothes and a few partially used sample-sized toiletries. At the bottom of the bag she saw towels, shower curtain and floor mat, sheets, a blanket, and a comforter set. Her excitement was evident. She said that with all of these items provided she could now reprioritize her finances and move forward on the pathway to economic self-reliance.
